Apis dorsata, the giant honey bees are distributed in Southeast Asia. They nest in the open, are about twice as long as our bees, and are more defensive. They usually nest in large numbers on the same tree (bee tree).
A giant honey bee in flight while foraging on a megafruit pachira (Pachira macrocarpa, Bombacaceae) flowers. I have seen A. mellifera, dorsata, and florea foraging on the same plant!
